Milking it

Untitled

Guess what vitamin this is that I’m swallowing every day (against all my pill-popping principles lolol).

Can be found at any pharmacy for RM1-2 per strip

Mommies would know.  Yes, folic acid.

Hahahahaha.

No la not pregnant or anything of the sort yet.  But a few months ago I went to my gynaecologist for a checkup and she asked if we were planning on having kids anytime soon.

I said, “if it comes, it comes!”

She said OK and recommended I start taking folic acid as a precaution.  Folic acid should ideally be taken three months before conception but she said she herself started taking it a year before her son was conceived no harm one.

She said also because I don’t exercise (haiyo say again *waves hand) and because I’m skinny, I had better take calcium too.  She said “just go to the supermarket and buy the first Anlene you see.

Tadah!

Folic acid and calcium (along with iron and zinc) are some of the most crucial elements needed for your health and baby’s.

Did you know that folic acid is required during the first 27 days of pregnancy for the development of the baby’s spinal bone and brain? So if you don’t have sufficient folate levels and you accidentally get pregnant…. :X :X

Folic acid levels of 400mcg a day (in addition to intake of food folate from a varied diet) is recommended for women planning pregnancies. That’s 170 slices of cheese!  Maybe Cheesie can do it but I don’t like cheese hahaha.  So a milk supplement is best.

As for calcium, my doctor told me that insufficient calcium intake during pregnancy can cause the baby to leach calcium from our body to build its own bones.  Kids ah, so self centered one lolol.  So calcium is crucial to prevent osteoporosis.

And iron is required for red blood cells formation.  Not enough iron also = not enough blood = child not enough oxygen + you are at risk of anemia.

Enough of the doom and gloom!

Here’s a one stop solution for you.

Anmum Materna contains important nutrients required by expectant mothers – calcium, iron, zinc and folic acid.

(In Malaysia Anlene is synonymous with calcium, while Anmum Materna is the #1 pre-natal milk in the country.)

In fact, 2 glasses of Anmum Materna a day and your folate level is set.  (Note: Anmum Materna is the only high folic acid milk powder that is clinically tested)

  • hi aud. i am ur new reader (4month) i really excited with ur new label, foruchizu. i will travel to KL this march, can u give me the address of isetan? i come frm indonesia. so i am not familiar. thank you. thank you. cant wait to visit ur store 😀

  • greedy much? this is an ad..why dont you specify this clearly?

  • Hi Jane, I think it is okay to read an ads for knowledge purpose. I think Audrey forgot to label as audvertorial, sometimes I forget to label in my own blog too. :)nn(No offence)

  • Ah! I also learn in my food science class that folic acid super important! Woman should take certain amount everyday even if not trying to get pregnant !

  • Unfortunately the maternal milk available locally contains TRANS FAT, which is a terrible thing to consume when pregnant. Once you cross the border or in most developed countries, maternal or infant milk do not contain trans fat. Trans fat is artificially modified fat with the sole purpose to prolong shelf life. Trans fat does not get broken down by the body, stays within to wreak havoc and has been linked to many cancers, diseases and health issues.n

  • If this is indeed an ad, then shame on formula company for treating Malaysia market as an ignorant dumping ground. Take trans fat out of the maternal milk.

  • Thanks Kharn Yee! Yea I forgot to set it to Audvertorial will change it now!nnJane, what does being greedy have to do with not setting it as an ad? Thanks for letting us all know you’re not just an aggressive bitch but also stupid. 🙂

  • Thank you for highlighting this! This is in fact an ad so I will check with the milk company and update with what I find out.

  • Do you have any articles or proof of this? I tried googling but couldn’t find. Is it on the milk packets ah cos I’m not in Malaysia now cannot verify myself

  • It’s the isetan at klcc! Thanks for your support!!

  • ok. i will visit ur store. have a fun holiday at japan.

  • Agreed with dancingmommy totally… Aud, I think u can get some fact by googling comparison of formula milk n breastmilk.. Whether is Pre natal milk or formula milk for babies, it’s all the same.. Apparently these days, these kinda milk powder/formula milk ain’t good for us anymore.. Fresh milk (for adults) n breastmilk (for babies) is best for us humans now..

  • This is one of the link… if i have more, i will post more for u to see.. 🙂 http://www.notmilk.com/milkinfo.txt

  • In this generation, formula is out. N that includes whatever pre-natal milk that FM companies r trying to introduce coz too many mommies r now super informed about da goodness of 100% breastfeeding. Pls arm urself with breastfeeding facts – WHO recommendation – 2 years.

  • Yes, it is on the foo label. Sometimes, the milk company try to mislead public by calling it ‘tran fatty acids’ like the essential fatty acid. Hydrogenated fat is also another name they hide behind. Anmum contains trans fat. Hence I cross the border to buy maternal milk. nnPrev poster is right, breast milk is best. WHO recommends breast milk over fresh milk, over formula. Yes, WHO recommends formula as a last resort.n

  • Think over it carefully. If formula milk is soooooo great, why would WHO not recommend it? These companies have the money to advertise but it doesn’t mean formula is the best.nnThey claim to have added this vitamin, that vitamin, but what is this vitamin derived from? They have no proof on the absorption rate. And we have not talked about the level of sugar. Formula is plied with copious amount of sugar to trick babies and young children into drinking more.n

  • nI have always like reading your blog because I find you intelligent and have an honest voice. As a blogger with influence, I would implore you to represent companies with consciences.

  • Hello! I know definitely if the mother is able, she is encouraged to breast feed instead of formula. But right now the issue is about Pre-natal milk right. So I’m quite confused because you’re saying that formula Pre-natal milk is not good for us and fresh milk is better right? But then the link you left is condemning cows milk which is fresh milk isn’t it? Correct me if I’m wrong but your statement and proof is quite contradictory. I’m damn confused haha

  • I am aware of the benefits of breast feeding, as are most women I would think. But I was not aware of the ‘dangers’ of prenatal formula. Are you confusing the issue? If not, I’m very interested in finding out more info and proof about this as I don’t want to mislead my readers either. Thank you!

  • Now are we talking about prenatal milk or breast feeding because I’m confused wtf. Most of the comments here are bashing prenatal milk but the proof provided mostly touch on baby formula which to me is a different thing, is it not?nnI was under the impression that WHO advocates breast feeding over baby formula because breast milk is still the best for babies. But what about women who are unable to breast feed for some reason? Their other choice is baby formula I would assume. n

  • I did a search before I wrote this ad and didnt come across any such info like you mentioned. Maybe I dont know enough about this or I looked in the wrong places. All the stuff you said – could you post links so we can all learn and educate each other? Thank you!

  • Yes please stop bombarding this poor little blogger. If I werent a mom I wouldn’t know so much about breastfeeding or formula feeding. The mom herself should be informed and matured enough to choose what is best for herself or the baby. And not just follow blindly whatever that is being advertised/blogged.

  • I always wonder how ads you’re doing always relevant to what you’re facing in real life! 🙂

  • They’re not bombarding me la haha. But I’m very confused now cos people are all saying different things and their proof is conflicting. I dunno what are facts and what are hearsay now. I’d be very happy if we could get some clear facts with proof and proper sources 😀

  • Haha I just pick ads relevant to my frame of mind at the time

  • I mention breastfeeding because of a previous comment. nnThe trans fat is stated on the nutritional label, under fat. On ‘proof’, there are plenty of available research online, via journals on the damage of trans fat on health in general. First one I found…nnhttp://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/20650350nnBtw if you think your sponsor is ‘helping’ you, please take time to read this.nnhttp://www.whattoexpect.com/preconception/fertility-foods.aspx

  • Formula companies make maternal and formula. This is why prenatal and postnatal formula milk are inevitably lumped up in the discussion. Maternal milk is the latest invention, because they capture the market earlier. But in developing countries (as they deem Malaysia to be), the quality of the ingredients is questionable. Just think, they add trans fat to prolong shelf life, improve bottom line, KNOWING it is harmful to fetuses and babies.nnIt is not personal against you Audrey. But since you

  • have taken on an ad for this company via your blog, it is also a chance for us to let this formula company know that Malaysians are not ignorant and that they should take trans fat out (no matter how little they claim), just like they did for their milk in other developed countries.

  • halo Aud, nice reading alll the comments here. nBut la, every info from Google is conflicting one, some is like condemning max about something with all the survey thing plus statistic and a lot of deep words i don’t even know what it means wtf, while some is like supporting max about the same thing with a lot of proof yadda yadda, so sure don’t know what to follow one, i would like to know more also!!nSo if you manage to dig out something useful with your resources, pls share ya. tq tq.. ^_^

  • Dancingmommy what if a mother does not have supply of breastmilk to feed her baby till 2 years old? then the baby drink what??

  • The probability of a mother not having enough or no milk supply to feed her child is very low. This is a misconception created by the formula companies to safeguard their own interest. You may find some information about this here: http://www.bellybelly.com.au/breastfeeding/not-enough-milknNow if a mother really can’t breastfeed (after taking supplement, etc), THEN she can feed the child formula as a last resort as there is no other choice.

  • During my pre-natal class, a gynae recommended that we eat natural food to get all the nutrients needed to grow a healthy baby. Natural doesn’t have to be difficult to prepare or costly provided we do some research about it.

  • Exactly elephant…

  • Join The Breastfeeding Advocates Network on FB n read ALL the documents in the Files folder. Pumping maternal milk into the bodies so that the unborn child gets it is as bad as giving infants n toddlers formula. Every mother can breastfeed, it all depends on the determination n willpower, even full time working moms who pump hardworking-ly in the office can stock up, IF they choose to.

  • If for some medical reason a mommy cannot breastfeed, note : medical reason, mommies will look for donated breastmilk. Have u even heard of the Malaysian chapter of Human Milk for Human Babies? Becoz dun forget, before formula came into the pic, which made it seem so easy to feed babies with formula, what did mommies feed their children?

  • Die la if no formula. That has alwiz been the natural way, breastfeeding. If u refer to WHO, first is mother’s milk (direct feed), second is expressed breastmilk, third is donated breastmilk n finally right at the very bottom, formula. Formula, maternal milk etc r all sugar, starch, corn flour, preservatives ETC ETC ETC.

  • Hello yes Nobody is denying the importance of breast milk. However i appreciate if we could stick to the topic which is prenatal/maternity milk and whether its good or not for mother and baby, not confuse the issue with breast milk vs formula? Someone said prenatal milk affects the breast milk so lets discuss that can?

  • AK, do u know babies dun necessarily need milk after they turn 1? After 1, they can get all nutrients from solid food. In fact, so many mommies choose plant based milk if they really have to, after one. Its normal that breastmilk composition changes as baby grows to accomodate their needs n definitely normal to reduce as ppl grows coz they r eating more n more solids, ie wide variety of fruits, veges, grains etc. I dun even give my child commercial cereals, never, coz they r so sweet n starchy!

  • as baby grows, I mean…

  • If u know formula is better than breastmilk, then maternal milk is the same as for formula for babies lor, thats what Im trying to say, my earlier statement was about taking maternal milk when pregnant is juz as bad as giving babies formula, aih, formula companies r now facing stiffer competition. If I dun explain in such detail about breastmilk vs formula, how would your readers be able to link this up with maternal milk especially for those who don’t know?

  • Those in the industry all know ma, cant sell formula to babies due to more mommies breastfeeding, sell maternal milk lor, growing foetuses still get it ma. Eat naturally when pregnant will do la. If u wana learn more, find out more from mommies. Most informed mommies know all these geh.

  • hi DM! i’m replying you cos you seem the most knowledgeable here. i did some reading on trans fats; trans fats is naturally occurring in beef & dairy products. thus drinking cows milk means you will ingest some amount of trans fat too right? so then how is cows milk better than prenatal milk?

  • i also read this article which says “The Food and Drug Administration allows foods to contain up to 0.5 grams of trans fat per serving and still be labeled as having zero grams of trans fat.” http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=102351941nnso there is possibly 2 reasons here – either overseas they don’t state, or malaysian companies are leaving in trans fat for profit purposes. nnlastly, how much trans fat is bad for you? is the amount in milk ok or dangerous?

  • If you can’t produce milk or refuse to use formula milk, then hire a wet nurse.

  • I’m glad that you found out more about trans fat. I also have the same feeling that the overseas market is hiding the trans fat ingredient from the nutritional facts. I went to check on all milk powder in the market and so far only found 1 brand that has 0g of trans fat. I feel much relieved that we’re allowed to take up to 0.5g of trans fat per serving as my toddler’s milk powder contains 0.1g of trans per 100g!
