Success!
Comes to those who wait. ^^
After more than a week of unsuccessfully getting Fighter to breastfeed, I was on the verge of giving up.
The books say to try at night when he’s too sleepy and hungry to resist the breast. Fail. He’s never too sleepy to beat away the breast wtf. Or if he is, he just sleeps and ignores it.
Then the books say change to bottle teats that are harder to suck so he’ll prefer the breast. Gave him the tougher teats and he still won’t take direct feeding.
Every single time I tried, he’d press his mouth shut and whine and flail around and even hit and kick me just not to feed. T____T One time he even grasped my nipple wtf very painful ok hahahaha. Where is he getting all this strength to fight!? Oh yea my breast milk how ironic wtf.
The thing is I think he DOES know how to latch, he’s done it a few times; he just doesn’t want to. So he’ll be screaming and miserable and I’LL be stifling my screams and miserable and I figured it’s better for our relationship if I stopped.
(Digression: He super loves the confinement auntie who’s very good at soothing him. And Fatty who comes home and carries and plays with him. Not sure about me cos I’m the one who keeps pushing an unrequited nipple into his mouth and feeding him yucky vitamins through a pipette then spraying saline into his nose wtf. T_T)
I even told the confinement auntie not to wake me up to feed him anymore since he flat out refuses to latch.
Then this morning a miracle happened!
He was awake and looking around in his cot so I picked him up to bring him downstairs.
I noticed him opening his mouth wide and sort of smacking his lips so I thought, okay let me try one last time since I’m in the privacy of my room anyway and still in pajamas and no bra hahaha.
He took to it like a dream!!!! *tears of joy
Don’t know why!! Maybe he was hungrier than usual. Maybe he’s finally old enough to know how to suckle? He’s only 37 weeks gestation after all. But he knew exactly what to do without any guidance, just opened his mouth wide and latched on correctly and drank and drank.
The bad thing about bfeeding is that I can’t see how much he’s drinking though so we still gave him the bottle after that. But very happy!
Wendy (who is my mommy sifu) listed out the pros and cons of both direct latching and bottle feeding so I’m happy that he’s on his way to be flexible in feeding! That way we get the best of both worlds wheeeeee.

Aud you feed him vitamins through a pipette???? Or a syringe? ಠ_ಠ
Hi Audrey, happy that Fighter finally willing to latch! I think you should join The Breastfeeding Network Advocates in FB, it’s very informative, been bf for a year, my baby is 16 months old & finally wean off. I agree bf is a very tough job especially if you’re exclusive pumping mommy like me! I do hope you join TBAN anything regarding block ducts, storing milk, baby not latching, etc.there are people to help & lactation consultant too!
syringe!!! say wrongly hahahah thanks for pointing out
Btw I saw First Few Years at paradigm mall are selling some premie clothings.
Hi audrey, congrats for the dlacth,fighting…….mommy…..btw my daughter sleep in rocker until three month old even thou she not premie, but baby love suggle, dont like big space,so i guess is fine let him sleep in moses basket and tuck witj more pillow, but make sure u swaddle him so he dont disturb the beanie pillow that can cause suffocating.all baby need god sleep for grow so try ur best to make him comfy for his grow,is fine mosed basket, rovker, car seat. Dont worry about back bones and stuff. Most important now is sleep n milk.cheers mommy
Congrats Audrey n Fighter…. lots of love frm me to baby Fighter
Hi Audrey, can kindly share the list of pros and cons? I’m due in about 2 weeks. Would love to know the experiences. Thanks!
YAY! Success!!!!!nWell done to you and Fighternps: He really is a fighter huh? Flails, kicks and…nipple grabs LOLL
CONGRATULATIONS AUDREY! This is awesome news I bet! Please give a gentle pat of love to Fighter for me for being such an adorable and wonderful little guy!
Yay! I had to retrainthekids to bf dunno why they can forget just two weeks no latching only! Hardest thing to do. Nexttime no need to wake up toewarm milk etc!
We have lots of similarities in the pregnancy department; my pregnancy was 22 weeks of in hospital or at home bedrest and a long list of issues, worry and angst. Then a preemie who was thankfully healthy but had problems with latching too. My son also just one day “got it” we were like “he’s seen the light!” and once he got it he was away. I think it’s mostly developmental; when he was ready and able he went for it. I still remember the relief thought, at least I didn’t suck at breastfeeding, clearly I wasn’t the picture perfect pregnant woman either. Much love to you all
I’m sorry to hear about your pregnancy troubles! You’re right; in hindsight it was probably developmental for fighter as well. And I do feel I’ve achieved something now that he can latch! Hahahah
Congrats! You’ll find out for yourself anyway the pros and cons. nnPros of breastfeeding:nNo preparation involved, don’t need to store, freeze, reheat etcnMore efficient – pumping means double duty of pumping n storing then feeding babynGet to feed baby yourself rather than someone else feeding him bottle while you pumpnnCons:nTakes longer to bf than bottle feednHard to do in public in Malaysia nCracked nipples wtf
Thank you!
We discovered its not the rocker or bed problem it’s the aircon though haha
I really don’t like that group! I find it judgmental and patronizing. All the info they have can easily be googled so… 🙂
Yay!
Hahahah how about a kiss instead
Yea mafia baby!
Congrats Audrey and Fighter.. i cheered up a bit when i read this post 😉

Hey Audrey, fabulous news! Congrats! Latching on really saves a ton of work and best of all, you’ll always have food for Fighter with you. Came in VERY handy when I was stuck in a jam on a car trip from Msia to Singapore once! Also, if you should get a blocked duct again (unfortunately, it’s v common), having Fighter latch on will clear it more effectively than using a breast pump, so that’s another pro! nbtw, it sounds weird but putting a chilled cabbage leaf in your bra around the infected area really helps when you have a blocked duct. I don’t know HOW it works but I tried it during desperate times and it did! I always kept cabbage in the fridge when I was nursing.
so sentimental when i read your post. makes me recall back my time one year ago. as i was also struggling like you to let my son latch after his discharged. and im glad he is quite accomodate to bottlefeed in daytime and direct latching in nighttime. Bravo mummy! keep up the good job, your perserverance paid off!
I didnt understand all your examples but I think I get what you mean. nn1. Maybe they don’t all mean to be but the tone in that fb group can be judgmental and patronizing which I don’t like. nn2. Too much noise ie people asking all sorts of things which I personally am not interested in cos maybe I don’t have that problem. So to me it’s a waste of time. nn3. If you’re going ‘help!’ Cos ur baby is in trouble isn’t it faster and better to google for answers? You can read proper research or real professional advice and decide for yourself rather than wait for unlicensed people to tell you which may not be true or may not totally apply to your baby. Of course asking for opinions is ok, but I certainly prefer getting medical advice from my doctor directly.
Yea it’s so much more convenient when he’s flexible isn’t it!
Yea dont have to worry about your milk going bad right hahaha
Congrats Fighter and Mummy for being persistent. I forgot he is actually not supposed to be out yet. He looks tiny from this angle and normal from other angles. 🙂 Cute 🙂 🙂
Yay!! A good latch is like winning the lottery ** ^_^** I remember that feeling well. In fact when we went to full time bottle, I really missed direct feeding so much. Babies change a lot so enjoy this time as much as possible, they always will keep us guessing…
What an acheivement! So happy for u Audrey! U have been such a strong and brave mummy throughout your pregnancy and glad that your effort paid off..i’m due in abt 2 weeks time, my pregnancy hasnt been smooth sailing and hope to be as brave and persistent as you are 🙂
So happy for you Audrey…! And can feel your happiness in this entry too! For me I’m the opposite, today I gave up on breast feeding coz too damn painful already. Latch correct but earlier days, baby gnawed too much already for me to continue. Hope I will have your preserverance in reintroducing the boob to baby later! 🙁 🙁
I actually think both ways are equally fine! Haha I just thought itd be more convenient if I can switch whenever I like
All the best and congrats!
Congrats Audrey! great to know your baby is finally latching.its so much more convenient. When he is ready for semi solid food, I’d suggest an all in one cooker, steamer and blender to make baby food with ease and reduce hassle of washing up. I’ve been using thermomix to weigh, steam, cook and purée baby food. And it works like a dream!
Congratulation audrey! it feel good to direct latch right? trust me, u’ll love the special bonding experience, my baby is also easy on DL n bottle feed, but when she’s with me, she refuse bottle, she’s almost 1 yo n i plan to wean her off since wanna get her another brother/sister before my factory cease functioning, but i feel so bad about it, how am i gonna let go the precious time together? sigh~ just wait n c
