That’s rich

I was itching to update my blog but then I realized… besides Fighter what else do I blog about!? I only ever want to blog about Fighter!

Jeng jeng jeng. Identity crisis.  Besides a mom I am NOTHING. Anyway not gonna blog about parenting today.

When I said the above, maybe it means that being a mom is the main focus of my life right now and that’s why my social media platforms are all full of it – blog is full of Fighter stories, Instagram is full of Fighter pictures, Dayre is full of… rubbish wtf.  Also a lot of Fighter.

So when I said that, I thought about this Instagram account Jammie introduced to me.  It’s called @malaysiarichandfamous wtf.

True to its name, malaysiarichandfamous is an IG account chock full of reposted photos from rich people (mostly young) in Malaysia, flaunting their wealth and material goods.

The day I found it, I stayed up late scrolling through all their Instagram accounts and jumping from one rich kid to the other. HAHAHA. *loser

Damn fascinating ok!  I gotta confess, I was completely immersed in stalking their lives wtf.  Every single aspect of their lives seemed totally different from mine or anyone that I knew.

Here’s what I learned about the rich and famous.

1. Most are second generation. The ones I saw on the Instagram anyway. I.e. the ones busy flaunting their wealth wtf.  That’s why I spent so much time there; I had to put my Google skills to the test and a lot of time was taken up Googling them to find out who their parents are wtf.  Most of them are really young, like younger than me or even still in school.  So not to be judgmental or anything but the likelihood is the money is their parents’ la not theirs. So to be honest when I saw that I felt a bit like Wtf, you didn’t earn this money yourself why you show off so much!? A reader on Dayre pointed out that maybe I was judging and that for all I knew, these people could be super smart or successful in their own right.  Which is a fair point really cos maybe they’re doing something useful with their lives too and this is just their way of enjoying themselves.

But then for them to be spending this amount of money means the money still isn’t theirs.  If it was, their names would be famous in their own right cos you need to be THAT successful to spend like that.  Then it opens up a whole new can of worms – is it then okay for them to show off if they’re successful? Why okay but not okay if they’re bums? And why not okay when they’re not hurting anyone? #philosoraptor

Either way, show off also good cos I can kepoh. HAHAHA.

2. They’re usually all friends with each other.

You know what they say, birds of the same 100K gold feather flock together.

3. Their favored brands are…

For girls their bags are all Hermes wtf.  No LV. No Prada. Maybe got some Chanel thrown in because everybody likes the Boy. But if not, Hermes. The same design in like a billion colors. They’re like my auntie who buys the same shirt in five different colors, but on crack.

Why buy the same damn bag in different colors? Got so many other designs and brands in the world why don’t want?  The Hermes design isn’t that nice honestly.  Actually I don’t find it nice at all but maybe I have low class taste wtf.

My theory is that (a) they have too much excess money therefore it’s perfectly justifiable to buy the same bag a dozen times.  But if I had that much money I’d buy all sorts of bags, not just from one brand! I’d buy plastic bags, garbage bags, recycling bags, eyebags (the cute ones, not the ones that make you look like shit wtf), etc.  So the logic doesn’t make sense to me.  Therefore, second and more probable conclusion is (b) they’re buying it for the status it brings. Which I guess considering the price, is a reasonable investment.  You’re paying for status, prestige, and a whole lotta envy.

For guys it’s usually Loubutin for shoes, Givenchy for shirts and Panerai/Richard Mille/brands I never heard of for watches.  Accessories are frequently Cartier.

4. THEY ARE MAD SHOWY

Wah this one. I scroll through their pictures also I feel overwhelmed.  And very broke. Not all, but there are many that seem to make a career out of posting expensive things on Instagram. Much like @itslavishbitch whom I suspect is just a hilarious troll, nearly every photo on their Instagram is dedicated to showcasing at least one expensive item be it clothing, accessories or cars. Or the occasional private jet.

These people are especially adept at taking photos of their car steering wheels so the brand logo is obvious.

Which begets the question: Are their lives really chock full of material goods or do they just want to make it look that way? If it’s a matter of making others perceive it that way, doesn’t that mean that their lives revolve around material goods anyway?

Then is that the biggest joy of their lives, to look/feel/be rich?  Why is it so important that their entire social media account be filled with proof of wealth?

5. It’s never enough

This really hit home to me.  The average middle class person aspires to own something Louis Vuitton or Gucci or Prada. These people aspire to own Hermes, and because they can afford it, they do.  I don’t know any other bag more expensive than Hermes therefore I can assume Hermes is the most desirable.  So they’ve got their Hermes, and then they get another Hermes.  And another. And another.

It never ends.  Even if you’ve reached the pinnacle, there will always be something more.  I can get all preachy now and say, that’s why you need to learn to be satisfied with what you have, but the truth it, that’s human nature.  Never did this understanding hit me so hard as now: that we can have it all  but will still never be satisfied.

Unless of course you know, you reach Nirvana.

(Nirvana = final goal of Buddhism, state where there is no suffering, desire or sense of self.  My Sunday Dhamma school learnings applied correctly wtf)

What’s the conclusion? No conclusion la except that I hope if I ever get that rich, to not forget where I came from.  And to not buy five Hermes bags in different colors wtf.

  • You posted this also on Dayre few days ago, right? I only opened for few seconds & didn’t dare to continue bcs I will be feeling very broke lol. Same goes to my country lor, the rich usually knows each other and hangs out together. Everyone else isn’t invited to their showy party wtf. I hope I don’t sound sour wtf. Hahaha.. I shall quote your conclusion sometimes :)nnI hope if I ever get that rich, to not forget where I came from. And to not buy five Hermes bags in different colors wtf. -Audrey.nnHahaha.. (I seriously agree there’s many bags nicer than Hermes!! I love Chanel & Balenciaga. Low class mah? Haha..)

  • I think Hermes Birkin/Kelly designs are beautiful – but I agree with you, people are buying for the status and power it gives. Same for many Sg ig accounts which I also stalk LOL 😡 well, lucky for these people, but you have the greatest blessing in your life that is your cute baby:)

  • i think it is really depending on the way they are being brought up.

  • Haha high five about Hermes bags not being nice!! I will never understand people who pay obscene amounts of cash for ugly things. Maybe it’s something only filthy rich ppl understand lol

  • There was an episode on “Come Home Love” whereby a lady lawyer was using a counterfeit branded bag given by her bf. When everyone found out that she was using that, they all went “OMG..you are using counterfeit?” Everyone talk like it was a crime & a shameful act.nnI was like “hai moe ah? yau moe gau chor? use no brand or AA brand stuff is shameful? I am not rich and whatever money I can save, I save for a rainy day and not on something sinfully expensive. I’m more than happy using those ‘recycle bags’ given free.

  • I think it’s the same phenomenon that happens at every economic level for individuals who are materialistic. No different from middle class people who compare what kind of cars, etc. they have. Just a bigger wallet.

  • I think that applies in Hong Kong only because those hongkies really go all out for branded bags and they have such stereotype that if you don’t buy branded bags you’re a cheapo :/ that’s probably because China is well known for fake stuffs? For Malaysia, I don’t think a lot of people care whether you bring real or fake except for those rich people who puts themselves highly above everyone else. n

  • I agree with whatever you’re saying Audrey. I see some of my friends who are really rich, posting pictures of their new handbags/expensive cars/luxury stuffs and I always classify them as #rkoi which is true hahaha I think it’s just that they now have a better platform(Instagram/fb etc) to show off rather to announce to all their friends. Even better, they gain likes and fame through that. So I guess that’s why they post anything and everything which is of expensive brands on Instagram.

  • “Birds of 100k gold feathers flock together” HAHA I love that phrase. So true that I wouldn’t buy the same handbag design too, if I had so much money I would definitely go on holidays in exotic places….then take photos of views whops!

  • what’s #rkoi? and good point ah maybe it’s for fame and recognition

  • yup true!

  • yea that’s true. that’s why I questioned when is it ok to show off your wealth? why is it unacceptable to show off wealth? is it cos everyone else is jealous?

  • That’s rich and that’s instagram for you haha, this is THE most relevant post I ever read ever. Very on point on the level of brands of bags too #laughdieme. I am still on 0 level and unlikely going anywhere cause very everytime enough saving also very sayang to spend. Have a bff whose husband struck gold and it’s been raining bag for her!!! A lot of social gap ever since and felt very sad about that haish, Maybe my conclusion is : Not let the brand of bag define my self worth #everydayimtrying sobs.

  • Youngsters nowadays are stinkin rich. I am making money with my intern allowance and the workload s overwhelming. And there they are showing off their pink mercedes, porsche or whatever. But anyhow I think earning money on our own (not depending on anyone else’s wealth) is a valuable lesson. We won’t spend money lavishly and inappropriately, and also value small things.

  • Whenever I see people spending money like that, I just think them so vulgar. Throwing it about like it’s going out of fashion. Sooo nouveau riche and common.

  • lol that’s what my friend says – that it’s the nouveau rich who splash money around. but I’m sure the old money do that too? and not all nouveau rich spend like crazy either

  • Went to take a look at that Instagram of the troll that you posted & saw a user post this line: “You’re so poor, all you have is money!”. Which I think is rather true for some of these kids – I guess somehow wealth fills that void in their life, which us (normal people) fill with other.. Well other stuff wtf.

  • I couldn’t agree more with you…Your entry make me think how easy for me now to spend $50 USD for dinner ( I live in Japan now) while just a year ago, I will think twice to spend $10 for dinner. I wonder though if someday money is not a problem anymore, will I stay the same or will I started to become like those people. Like you mentioned, we will never satisfied. On the other hand, Im not sure if it just me, its really hard to leave a comment on your blog, every time I tried to edit it,the page will freeze and i have to wait 20-30 seconds. ( it happened few times till i counted.hehe)

  • you obviously don’t know it coz i’m on the other side of some computer screen la; but i’m slowclapping you. /bigweteyes

  • richnkidsnof ninstagram (:

  • Yay new thing to kepoh wtf. Its just so disgusting la. #greeneyedmonsterbutnotreallynokay back to the good cute stuff. Babieeeeswtflol

  • check out @ec24m from singapore! she has most Hermes bags in the world ( in newspapers and all), more than victoria beckham, she got 400,000 sgd a month as alimony from her husband! and shes gorgeous!

  • truly richer than the malaysian rich and famous! shes really stylish too!! she has 300k followers on insta!

  • R u talking about chrystan? Just bcos u cant afford hermes dont make ihave5colorsofthesamehandbag an issue. Just run alongggg b a jobless mother , a parasite to ur husband and shut up go breastfeed ur baby ok. U r right thats what u r. NOTHING

  • lol the comment below is just ridiculous

  • actually before this account I had no idea who chrystan is. now I do know and sorry to burst your bubble but I wasn’t talking about her. sorry that your efforts to defend and suck up to her have gone to waste. :)nnalso you might want to work on your reasoning and understanding skills. learn to differentiate a philosophical searching post and a bashing which is what you think this is. you clearly have a lot to learn

  • yea. look who’s the jobless one lol. her job is kissing ass wtf

  • @doddleshann.. I’m not sure if you’ve stayed/lived in HK or have HK friends who are like that as a result, you end up stereotyping them like that. But I guess there are always people like that regardless of their nationality. My husband is a Hk-er and his relatives are well-to-do in Singapore context owning properties that are at least SGD6M but they definitely do not look down at people who doesnt own/use genuine brands. You will be surprise to know that Singaporean, Malaysian and even Westerners, apart from PRC, loves counterfeit goods. Plus, if you have stayed in HK, you will realize that Hk-ers detest PRC to the extend that if they hear you speaking in Mandarin, they would treat you differently immediately. My guess, there are bound to be boastful/showy people in every nationality and it’s usually the poor/lower-middle class that likes doing so.

  • how do you know she’s richer lol. you don’t know exactly how much all these people have also

  • well shes rly rly gorgeous so just sharing and she does have the most no. of hermes bags!!! do check her out (:

  • I agree with you. These days, kids showing off wealth isn’t theirs. It’s their parents money. And clearly they brag about it as though they own it. I have a friend who is rich as well and she shows off A LOT. I hate it. These kids don’t know what life is.nAnd what is with that Linda bitching about? Clearly she didn’t go to school and have no respect to others. I bet she doesn’t even respect her parents.

  • hehe thanks but it’s not the Hermes bags I was interested in. it’s the fact that their lives seem so different. it doesn’t matter how many bags she owns, to me at least

  • lol she just totally misconstrued the post and got into a fit for nothing

  • LOL at Linda getting angry on behalf of someone who will never even realise she exists.

  • I feel kinda sorry for these kids, in all honesty. I don’t know why I feel that way but I do and all I can say is I’m happy, contented, very cushy in my middle class life, doing challenging work that I actually enjoy and not have to constantly think of the next thing to buy. You can’t take those riches with you when you die; now their bags, expensive fountain pens (?), and their gold belts (??) may be ‘nice’ things to play with now but in the end it’s kinda um useless. Unless you are going to sign things with expensive fountain pens in the afterlife, maybe?

  • I don’t think it’s a problem using parents’ money if sooner or later, they will be the heir to their parents’ business. If parents are not complaining with their attitude, we have no saying in this. Rich parents love their kids too. The way of showing their love is shoving them with gifts and money. That’s what happened to rich kids. I even know a guy with 20k allowance a month and when he did not finish his allowance, his mother got upset with him. So who to blame?

  • LOLOL

  • i finally understand why you’re so popular. youre sucha practical and humble person with an incredible attitude despite what you have. you have more than what others have yet you stay so down to earth. not to forget, an amazing mommy and wife (:

  • Love reading all the comments here.nnNow, if only one or two of those ibuyeverythinginfivecolors subject come forward and clarify to everyone here when they post their ibuyeverythinginfivecolors belongings on social networks, is it their intentions to show everyone that its their normal #OOTD or to flaunt their wealth to those who can’t ibuyeverythinginfivecolors faces.

  • I guess when I said showing off I was referring to those who purposely take photos of their car steers wheel for Eg. I know the average person who drives a perodua may do that too but I realize those with fancy cars do that a lot more often. doing it once or twice to illustrate that you’re driving somewhere is normal. more than that makes people think they’re showing off, whether they are or not

  • I guess u r right. Some of the rich and famous might just do it too many times that makes ppl think they r showing off. I should do an experiment, Imma post an OOTD with H&M top, Forever 21 accesories, Sg Wang bag & shoes like usual, I guess no one will say anything. Then I’ll post an OOTD with Chanel Classic, Cartier Bracelet, Rolex Watch and Ferragamo shoes (Sorry that’s the most expensive I’ve, I no ve Hermes or Patek Philippe..lol), I guess a lot of ppl will comment I show off. Human Nature I guess.

  • you’re another person completely missing the point. I’m not talking about things in the background. if expensive things are all someone owns, like you said, it can’t be helped. I’m talking about when that item is front and center. the focus of the photo. nnand you saying I did lots of research cos I’m jealous? lol. judgmental. just cos that’s the only reason you can think of you think it’s true of everyone else. talk about the pot calling the kettle black. n

  • also re: bags in different colors? you failed to get it again. it’s more about only being photographed with the same bag in different colors and no others that make people take notice. everyone else here has probably bought the same item in different variations. but they’ve also definitely bought and worn other items of the same type. if I have to explain this to you, you’re probably refusing to see this pov and thus it’s useless

  • really? I thought it’s cos I write interesting posts wtf hahahaaha

  • yes there’s a subtle difference. for someone like chrystan, I honestly didn’t think she was boasting, it really seems like everything she owns is just expensive. I’m talking about those who purposely take pics of their car logo or who hashtag all the brands they’re wearing to make it very clear. nnthat said, when I do ootd I also list down the brands. but nobody says I’m bragging cos they’re all mass brands wtf. so why if it’s expensive only people will jump? it’s because culturally showing wealth is thought to be crass. nn

  • cos nobody is satisfied really. it’s human nature. take myself for example. I’ve been to Japan so many times. I’ve lived there. and I still wanna go again. after I buy a new outfit I’m happy but two months later I’m itching to shop again. no more your level of wealth there will always be something more on your wishlist.

  • yea that’s very true. but again I have to clarify the difference between spending lavishly and showing off. nobody really cares how much one spends. but if that person starts putting it out there, it automatically gets people’s backs up

  • Just like how you want to show off you have a driver by taking a pic of your driver fetching you and fighter…Intentionally or unintentionally?

  • lol ask yourself la. no point answering the likes of you

  • I have a good read! Thank you Fighter;s mama for writing this. 🙂 You just speak out your opinion. I wish i can blog like you too! 😀
