In with the old

tim

Who doesn’t know this?  Probably the most famous bicycle in Malaysia.  Here’s Fatty trying to sit on it.  The little boy doesn’t look too happy got a fatty cramping his style. Geddit geddit. Lolol.

Murals like this all by artist Ernest Zacharevic are abundant in Penang.

But did you know his work is appearing in Ipoh now too?!

Ipoh, the birthplace of white coffee in Malaysia, is a city full of history and heritage.  Because of white coffee, its also birthplace to OLDTOWN White Coffee, the main white coffee manufacturer in Malaysia.

And now OLDTOWN has teamed up with Ernest Zacharevic to bring his signature murals to Ipoh, Old Town as part of their ‘Art of Old Town’ movement, a celebration of the heritage and history shared between Ipoh and OLDTOWN.

Here’s one of them.  Quite blown away by the detail on this!

Ernest (talk as though we’re on first name basis wtf) hard at work.  I find the scale of this impressive; I imagine the detail in this and the huge size of it must be not easy to reconcile.

Early sketch before he fleshed it out.

Here’s another mural.  As in Penang, some of the dilapidated buildings aren’t appreciated anymore yet they’re a huge part of our history.  All it takes is someone like Ernest Zacharevic to come in and add something on the walls to make people sit up and take notice and remember our heritage.

At work.

Another snapshot of another mural, this time of a bird.  Hummingbird right!!! #discoverychannelwin

The finished project in all its detail.

Next time you’re in Ipoh Old Town, make it a point to go check out the ‘Art of OLDTOWN’ paintings! I know I will.

You can also visit OLDTOWN’s official Facebook page at facebook.com/OldTownWhiteCoffeeMalaysia or follow them on Twitter at @OldTown_WCoffee for the latest updates on the ‘Art of OLDTOWN™’ project, now until 26 June 2014.
