Thieves

Every time I hear or talk about this I get angry. I’m just going to vent here because there’s no place else I can go.

Mount Holyoke (which is where I went to school) typically gives out a lot of financial aid to students, especially international students. This is because Mount Holyoke believes in making good education as accessible as possible to people of all walks of life, regardless of whether they have enough money to afford it or not. And this, I’m sure, applies not only to MHC but to a lot of other good schools in the US (don’t know much about universities in other countries so I’m not going to comment on them)

There are a lot of incredibly smart and gifted women all over the world who deserve the chance to go to a good school, but they might not have the money too either because they are not rich, or also partly because their currency might not match up to the dollar, making it very expensive to study in the US. So as I mentioned earlier, Mount Holyoke is very generous with its aid to international students so that they have an equal chance with their wealthier peers.

I was one of the lucky recipients! They gave me a very nice financial aid package, which meant that I only paid a quarter of the tuition every semester. Although financial aid doesn’t mean full on grants because it is not a scholarship per se, but a compilation of grants, loans and work study, it took a huge burden off my parents who are not rich.

I’m writing this because I have no more contact with the girls I’m going to talk about anymore.

There are a few girls from China at Mount Holyoke who are paying next to nothing to attend school there. When I say next to nothing, I mean maybe ten percent or less of the entire amount owed.

But when I went to their rooms, I saw Gucci paper bags and blue Tiffany boxes on their wardrobe, next to their Dior cosmetics.

WTF IS THIS? If you can afford Tiffany’s and Dior, why aren’t you paying more for tuition?

I pay maybe ten times more than you and I can’t afford a Gucci even now that I’m working. How can you live with your conscience that you’re taking all this money that you don’t even really need in place of someone else that might need it more?

The problem is that when you apply for aid, you are required to show proof that you are unable to afford the school unless you are on aid. Things like bank statements and house deeds and stuff. So if you’re from China and the financial aid people are in the US, it makes it possibly easier to fake poverty because the school would not be familiar with your local situation and the way things work there. (taking into account exchange rates, costs of living and plain cheating, i.e. submitting bank statements with less money)

I have no proof but I’m pretty sure this is what happened! Btw, I’m not saying girls from China are all lying cheaters wtf but in my experience those people whom I’ve come across just happen to be Chinese.

Suet recently applied from MHC for funding for an internship and requested for $800. The maximum is $2,500 but she didn’t ask for that because she thought she didn’t need it and it would be better used for someone else.

Then she overhead a few girls (from China AGAIN) saying that they’d each applied and gotten the maximum amount ($2,500) and chuckling about how little money they were going to need in reality because they were all renting together for the summer anyway and rent would be really cheap etc.

WTF!!!!

How can you do this! How can you take money from your own school which trusts that you are telling the truth? How can you live with yourself knowing that you might be depriving someone else of money for her education?

Do you think that you are very smart because you got the better of the institution and that you won, not even considering the consequences of your actions?

And have you ever thought that even if that money is not used for another student, it could have been used for the betterment of the school (YOUR school) and its facilities?

I am so angry! I am in Malaysia, thousands of miles away from the US. If I wanted to, I could easily just not answer any bills, pretend I’ve disappeared and not pay my loan. They wouldn’t know how to track me down either.

But that would be a terrible thing to do – I could be depriving some other bright girl of her education.

Even if they are doing it because like their mother is in the hospital and they’re secretly saving up money for her operation wtf I don’t care! It’s not your money to take anyway! Selfish, sneaky, gloating…thieves wtf.

Ok la to add some cheer:

My very own personal Santa!

With a very early anniversary present for me! T_________T (5 months early wtf)

Thank you baby!

LG Icecream!

I always wanted this phone!  I was heartbroken when I wasn’t chosen to write an advertorial for it and I didn’t have a reason to buy it cos Fat Her got me the infamous pink fake China iphone!

But now I do! (dropped fake iphone on coffee shop floor and cracked the touch screen, rendering it unusable)

Just that no money wtf.  So Tim felt sorry for me (and also  he read an article about how fake phones from China tend to explode WTF.  He kept telling me “eh don’t put your phone on your bed when you charge ar!” wtf)

Mike from LG kindly helped Tim to get it for me so thank you Mike!

I love my new phone!  Unfortunately I’m too busy right now to fully revel in it yet 🙁

I picked up this makeup remover at Watson’s the other day just cos it was a huge bottle and it cost less than RM35.

It’s so good okay!  It’s water-based so it just evaporates on your skin and it gets rid of mascara and eye makeup and foundation so well.

After I washed my face I patted it with toner and there was no makeup residue on it at all!

No need to buy RM260 Shu Uemura makeup remover anymore!  (not that I ever bought it la wtf so expensive)

Best Surprise Purchase ever <3

  • being a singaporean who has stayed in china for the past 6 years, I have to say though that 80% of those branded items are probably just very good fakes. Even the aunties on the street are prone to carrying balenciaga bags in numerous colours, wtf. They even produce fake tiffany boxes to put their fake tifanny necklaces to sell. (with the tifanny robin blue ribbon no less!) But it is true; they have a tendency to maximise/ make the best of their situation. ): which can be said to be exploiting as much as they can la. It’s just the way they’ve been brought up. Being one in a million (like literally :O), you have to use your smarts to get ahead, as far as you can possibly take yourself. I don’t know, thats my general experience. (:

p.s. no im not condoning their kiasu behaviour though, hoho.

  • blergh. it would suck big time when the school is aware of such situations and offer no more aids to international students.

    horrid people! :((

  • those china girls are like the infamous chinamen! i hate china people! no doubt our roots are there.. but we’re more of malaysian chinese with our own culture than those china people!

  • oh btw audrey, i subscribe your rss. it won’t show the whole post except the title. is this your way to asking readers to come to your site directly to increase views? tim also does it. sien. -_-” i read a lot of blogs per day, so g.reader compiles all of them together for me, senang.

thanks anyway. u’re very insightful. i envy u and suet went to prestigious MHC. it’s one of the most expensive women’s liberal arts coll.

  • oh yeah! I love mandom makeup remover too! but then it cant remove mascara!!!

  • What? Just one comment so far?

Come on people…. pick up the slack!!!

Lets see 50 comments this time round

  • A Chinaman once told me: “There’s nothing straight about a Chinaman/woman except his/her hair”.

Your story has proven the saying to be true. But nevermind lah, at least the gals who are cheating Mount Holyoke are not Malaysian Chinese, hahaha.

  • How i could relate your title of your post to my own experience. It seems to me that you have kept this for long and finally wrote about it.But it sucks when i can’t rant it in my blog cz the thief is jus staying under the same roof with me(we share a flat),and she and her bf read my blog! Big SuXX
Argh..i hope i my vent here doesnt take much of your space(well,i think it has)=)

How coincident that she’s our uni top student, scores in all exams, but not a smart thief..*doink*..whenever she steals stuffs, she’l leave trace..like uses my toilet paper and throws it in the toilet bin which is well exposed, sneaking in my room to check stuffs(i have no idea wat she’s so into) and messes up the arrangement, and one more gempak one…she unplugs one of the internet cable so that she can have more internet bytes for her download(we housemates share the internet too)…
i really would like to tell her that if she wants to curi,be smart la..pandai2 la..why leave trace to annoy ppl??!!!!
that’s all i wana say here…i hope she’l stop curi my toothpaste again..

  • i totally understand how u feel bout those girls…in my case, im currently holding a government scholarship overseas worth a bomb, in exchange for a 6 year bond with the government after i graduate…wat angers me to the MAX is that there are many classmates going together with me that ALREADY made up their mind not to come back and serve! i dun have to courage to say this to their faces but seriously please do not deprive other people that really wanna serve the country of having your place…how could they even not feel a pinch of guilt of spending tax payers money so selfishly! how would their kids think of them?! sigh…if ONLY malaysia will do SOMETHING…sigh!

  • Julie Lim: the thief of my house is Malaysian Chinese….

  • tim, why don’t you u post another 43 to complete 50 comments? say something like ‘i love you’ in every language available in this world, plus ur own tiah-creation.

  • seriously these people have no conscience how can they lie THEN gloat about being such con jobs?!

    amber: why so sour?

  • For your information, it’s happening in Malaysia.Rich bumi students are given full scholarship in place of
poor deserving ones because of connection. Even those give loan fail
to repay. In an article, it’s estimated that by 2020 the default
would be as much as 46 billion. So
nothing in this world if fair.

  • i have a few ex-classmates from china, and oh god the things they do..i can never think of anythin like that…
but i guess it`s true in a way.. they were brought up that way…

mm they might use fake ones in china…but when they are here in australia, its all genuine! oh wait. maybe only my friends T_T they spend thousands on gucci, lv…

  • I just want you to know that I totally read through every single word of your post. Probably most of it is buried in my subconcious but for the life of me, I can’t remember it right now. Jesus, I hope my boss doesn’t read your blog. I’m serious. There is actually a very high percentage that he does. 🙂

  • i once blogged about something like that about how rich kids are going all their way to get scholarships and not giving a chance to the poorer ones and i got flamed like hell. wtf. damn charm.

but its true. if u dont need it dont tke it just to look cooler and apparently make u looker smarter or something. sigh. people are just bleargh

  • Audrey. First of all, this is my first time here. Was abit shocked with the amount of words when I landed this page. However I finished reading it hehe. I came up with one conclusion.

You Can Write! Like Huai Bin! Ouhh yeah I am adding you to RSS too. However I agree with amber about the RSS subject. About showing only excerpt =\

    Tim is so sweet. Awwwww.

  • tiny: oh then maybe the bags and boxes i saw in their rooms were fake after all and they’re not that rich..

pat: exactly what i was thinking too!

amber: hehe better not say that you hate chinese…sounds quite racist. and yes i truncate my feed so people come to my blog. it’s not that hard, just one click away:)

misshazel: really? it works for me!

boss stewie: haha baby u slow

julie: hahaha that line was damn funny!

yeowhq: omg that’s terrible! have you confronted her about it?

AL: ya i know some people like that too:( they are being so selfish and ungrateful right!

lavender: hahaha but for rm260? i can’t afford it!

eunice: im not sure cos i got it for cheaper. i think RM700+?

amy: ya but i don’t think it’s all chinese people who do that…unfortunately those i encountered all happened to be chinese.

jammie: ya seriously! thinking about it gets me so pissed wtf

giam2020: yup the world isn’t fair:( but nothing stopping us from voicing our opinions:)

val: hahaha maybe those are the truly rich!

gin: awww why u kena flame! ok la i kena flame with u wtf

What a pain as the bf is pampering slash spoiling slash protecting her like a queen, but we the poor victim of injustice just lament slash mourn in the dark..=(

  • ICE CREAM!!!!
    LG ICE CREAM!!!!
gosh i don’t wanna be so overreacting but i can’t help it!!..love it too much :(((
but hey i agree with you
you can always c people who r super rich, trying to apply for scholarships which are meant for the poors! and sometimes they can just fake something and get the scholarship. life’s unfair. face it 🙁

  • i can relate to this post so much! i studied in one of the london unis where many malaysians came on govt scholarship. it totally disgusts me that most of these ‘scholars’ ate out/shopped/partied much more often than us who paid full fees. i know of some whose fathers are datuks/CEOs too. and more often than not these are the ppl who end up finding a job here in london and pay back only a small portion of what the govt spent on them. it’s a disgrace…

  • where i live also the same thing ler… sometimes more than often they force the guys to buy it for them – no money no honey wat…
they just drop them hot if the monthly LV gifts don’t turn up
-____-” but then you have the other few who trade their body for those goods and cash to support lifestyle but refuse to put in a cent of that into their education…go figure..

    superficial materialistic b*tches

  • RAWR

    yea yea yea
so when is ur boypren gonna
    update his blog ==

  • i’ve been in australia for almost a decade now and i’ve met a lot of chinese. when they first arrived, they dressed modestly. few months in, you’ll see them carrying lv, gucci or whatever branded bags you could think of. i’d like to believe what they carry are fakes. the problem is, they purchased them here.

and then there are times where i’d here them whine about originating from a not-so-wealthy family. but while complaining, they’re fidgeting their burberry purses.

all these annoy hell out of me because i know people who need sponsorships but not getting it. while them, who complains about their struggle with uni fees, but wear tiffany necklaces are getting them.

  • =s I fake my mum’s income too back in secondary school..cuz my dad left home since i was 6 and apparently in Malaysian school, unless your dad is dead or your parents are divorced, you cannot not put your dad’s salary. If you don’t fill in your dad’s salary, they’ll fill in RM9,999.99 for you. Then you cannot get any loan or pinjam any text book. =s

I do need the money though.

  • China people tsk tsk tsk. don’t be mad i sayang you ok? (secretly help you curse those people #%#@^$&^*(@$)

i’m using that Mandom makeup remover too! mine is in green. very good remover. easy and fast to remove makeup, good for lazy person – me. hahaha. i love it. why buy Shu Uemura when there is Mandom? (poor girl speech *cough and run*)

  • haha why this post can easily shift from an angry post to a happy post one? it’s like you’ve just combined two post you wrote at different time and moods XD

  • I contribute one comment for the 50 comments’ target.
btw.. your hp is so pretty..

    like “hp” like “owner”..
    [mat chee ju yan yeng]

  • You’ve such a loving boyfriend. Hope you guys last.

The LG Ice cream phone is really cute, but it lacks advance functions. But simple text, call, and low-resolution pix taking are all you need, it’s more than enough! It’ll sure garner you lots of envy glances and woooos from bystanders.

  • i bought the shu umeara cleansing oil because of good reviews and it gaves me oil seed =.= I use cheap remover, no problem… =.=

  • “hell hath no fury like a woman scorned”
    scary~

  • hey will u do a post about yr make up routine? just that would be really interesting stuff heehee,
    since u r such a pro in it..tks ;>

  • i bought the shu umeara cleansing oil because of good reviews and it gaves me oil seed =.= I use cheap remover, no problem… =.=
    BTW I love your blog!

  • U r such a thoughtful girl, Aud! I’m angry when i read your post. In fact this happened to many of the malaysian scholar as well. Those that received Malaysian government scholarship are rich and can afford gucci bags and gucci shoes. In fact a PhD student receiving Malaysian goverment scholars received double the amount of money given by foreign countries. How come Malaysian government never calculate the living cost before giving out the scholarship? There is where my parents money gone by paying tax. Wasting on those ppl who claim to learn new technologies in foreign countries but never go back to serve Malaysia government afterall.

  • I think that some readers are going too far by insulting the chinese. No doubt that they were wrong in lying to the school but I feel that the readers who poked fun at the Chinese are wrong. REALLY WRONG. anyway, its happening everywhere where ppl take government assistance for granted. I got my ass bitten by my friend’s mum when i said he shldnt take financial assistance from the sch cos hes like able to go on holidays every year!!!! tsktsk… So yea, we gotta live with it! (: Life’s unfair. or not?? 0___________o

  • audrey: i really like your LG ice-cream. hehe.can’t wait to read about ur comments after using it =)
    have a great weekend!!

tiny: i didnt know about g.reader b4 this.=p thanks for mentioning it here. i will try it out =)

  • i dont know y there is always a problem to load ur pics. no pics are shown except text… reading a blog without pics is js sooo plain…. can i know wat can i do in order to view ur pics??

  • sadly it also happens to Sg:(
China students(rich ones) come over here and deprive local needy students of not only places in uni, god knows how small this country is but also financial aid!T3T

  • actually, i do agree with you that sometimes, some china gals are really scheming and sly (i’ve met a plenty of them) and really money-greedy… my friend was tricked by a china gal and stupidly gave her £2000 which that filthy china gal say that it was rightfully hers…

    anyway, love your new handphone.

  • Yah I hate it too, I could have easily skipped on my student loan seen as though I’m living in Malaysia now – they could never find me nor make me pay.

But I paid it off in full anyway, why screw the system and deprive someone else of the chance you had?

The same thing is happening to the benefit system/unemployment system in UK. Too many people taking advantage of it means it’s getting tighter and tighter and those who really need it are having problems now.

  • I have a few tiffany boxes in my drawer and a big LV tote too but I’m not rich because those are all bought from KL Petaling Street. 🙁

  • Aud, i think you should write to your ex school & inform them of this matter in a friendly way. School authorities are always blinded with wuch matters. It’s the students responsibility too to let them know so they could have better investigation of student’s background next time. By doing this, i think you will be indirectly helping alot of students in need. I know we malaysians always sit back & complain only when bad things happen (no no, i don’t mean u la ok. Same here, teacher conned my classmate of USD 130 in some projects, that poor dude is too afraid to claim it back. Even if your letter is ignored later, at least you tried to make a change. Ranting alone no use 1, sendiri geram. 🙂

  • fourfeetnine.com to GoogleReader!

  • eh.. they sell that makeup remover at Sasa for 20 something…
