Ooib gets attacked wtf

I’m having a terrible cold right now but die also must write this.

Fatty was in Manila for a couple of days so I went back to the Oois.  After dinner, Mumsy Ooi asked Ooib to go out to the nearby Shell and get her a loaf of bread so Ooib and Sherlyn decided to take a walk there.

I was chilling in the living room bickering with Fat Her over wedding photos when I heard the doorknob being turned and Sherlyn’s laugh.

Then Ooib appeared with his face all pale, and Sherlyn followed holding on to him, sobbing.

She was actually crying, not laughing. *beats own head

Ooib said with his face all pale and blank, “We were nearly robbed.”

It turned out that when they were walking back from the petrol station (which is like a 5 minute walk away), they saw two men on a motorcycle approaching them.  The bike passed them…. then made a U turn and drove up to them again.

One of the guys on the bike asked my brother what time it was.

Ooib, sensing something amiss, replied “jalan lah jalan.” (“just keep moving”)

The one riding pillion took out a stick and brandished it at them D:  Ooib said it was about 3 feet long wtf.

I think at this point Sherlyn tried to pull Ooib to run, but one of the guys (not sure which) grabbed Ooib’s tshirt and they struggled like that for a while.  It could have been at this point that Sherlyn fell down.

Who knows what would have happened next if a white car did not zoom up from behind and ram into the fuckers!!!!! D:

Ooib and Sherlyn grabbed the chance to run for their lives.

They got home panting and that’s how my parents and I saw them.  They were physically unhurt but shaken.  Sherlyn couldn’t stop crying for like a half hour and Ooib was just quiet and forced.

Maybe because I wasn’t personally involved but I harbor much more anger towards our government than the robbers.  Jail those two fuckers and two more will pop up right away to take their place!  The root of the problem is socio-economic after all.

And what have our authorities been doing?  Why, claiming that crime has dropped in Malaysia for the past few years, that’s what.  Then how is it that each and every Malaysian has at least a personal involvement or knows a person who has had firsthand experience in a crime?  And that’s underrating it. I myself have had my phone pickpocketed twice already.  Both times also while clubbing fts.

Sure, statistics show that “safety” in Malaysia has increased, while “crime” has dropped.  But grassroots information show otherwise lor.  There are a lot of questionable variables involved which could have grossly impacted the stats, like underreporting of crime, biased parties involved in data gathering, mis-definition of the terms “safety” and “crime”.

I paraphrase this article I found here where it delves into the safety claims the authorities are making.

CLAIM #1: Malaysia is #1 safest in 19 middle income countries, #12 safest overall, ahead of USA and Britain (World Justice Project)

What I understand is that the World Justice Project (WJP) uses an index called Rule of Law Index which is not meant to measure safety but rather the compliance with the rule of law.

Meaning they look at factors like corruption, limited government powers, effective justice system, among others.  IT’S HOW WELL MALAYSIA AS A COUNTRY FOLLOWS RULES, NOTHING TO DO WITH OUR SAFETY.

According to the article, the poll refers to Malaysia as an “upper middle income” country which we are clearly not, so the data collection also does not seem balanced.

CLAIM #2: Malaysia is #1 safest and most peaceful country in South East Asia, #4 safest and peaceful in Asia Pacific, #19 safest and peaceful globally.

to again summarize the article, GPI is used in the study of the relative Peacefulness of a Country and not of a Country’s safety levels.  It looks at 23 indicators ranging from a nation’s level of military expenditure to its relations with neighbouring countries and the level of respect for human right

Out of 23 indicators, only 2 deal with crime:

(i) Perceived Criminality in Society; and

(ii) Violent Crime.

Malaysia’s “good” rankings in the GPI can be attributed to the 12 of the 23 indicators which were given scores of 1.0 which included but were not limited to items such as access to weapons, terrorist acts, UN Peacekeeping funding, heavy weapons, weapons exports, displaced people and so forth.

CLAIM #3: Index crime fell by 10.1% (between Jan – May 2012)

According to an anonymous source from the police (source here), crime is divided into two categories. One is ‘Index Crime’ and the other is ‘Non-Index Crime’. Stats announced by the police are only those cases under the ‘index crime’ category.

‘Index crime’ is defined as crime which is reported often enough and with sufficient significance to be meaningful as an index to the crime situation. Essentially, it means the index is the yardstick to gauge the crime situation of a given place, the district, state or the whole country. The index crime statistics will show whether the crime has increased, decreased or moving constantly.

‘Non-index crime’ on the other hand is considered as minor cases and does not occur with such rampancy to warrant its inclusion into the crime statistics or as a benchmark to determine the crime situation.  Basically any weird once in a lifetime case from what I understand?

‘Index crime’ is divided into two categories. One is ‘Violent Crime’ and the other is ‘Property Crime’.

‘Violent Crime’ comprises of – you know it – violent crime.  Murder; rape; armed robbery with accomplice; robbery with accomplice; armed robbery; robbery; and causing hurt. Meanwhile ‘property crime’ comprises theft; car theft; motorcycle theft; heavy vehicle theft; snatch theft; and burglary. These are the crimes used as statistics to portray the crime situation.

In 2009, the government came up with the ‘Government Transformation Programme’ (GTP) and ‘crime’ was amongst the ‘National Key Result Area’ (NKRA). The Key Performance Index (KPI, or indicator of success) set for the police on the 27 July 2009 under the NKRA was to reduce crime by 20%.

That tall order to reduce crime by 20% was a dilemma for the police. The police knew that the demand is idealistic but not feasible to be achieved. Any criminologist will tell that crime is the product of socio-economic factors and the police being a part of the criminal justice system cannot alone tackle this issue.

According to the fella, the police then came up with an ingenious way of achieving the target.

As said earlier, crime stats consist of only the index crime. Hence, they gradually lowered the crime statistics by shifting the index crime to the non-index crime. The shifting is done at the time the police report is lodged. The classification of the crime from index to non-index will be captured in the police reporting system as ‘non-index’ and thus not registering it as an index crime for the purposes of statistics. Lowering the index crime will show that the particular crime is on the decline.

On this line, it is entirely possible that the police also discourage lodging of reports.  Like when we called the police following Ooib’s encounter, they came very promptly but were quite lackadaisical about us going to the station to file a report.  They were like, “up to you la, mau ke tak mau. Nak pergi esok pun boleh…” [up to you if you want to. Even if you want to go tomorrow, that’s ok.]  OF COURSE GO LA THEN.

On the other hand, the PDRM (police department) and PEMANDU have their defense to this.  Read here.

Now I’m not presuming to say that yea our crime stats are bullshit.  But I’m inclined to believe that there is hanky panky going on here lor.  What is any Malaysian supposed to do given all the crime stories we hear and experience ourselves!?

Then they blame it on the media who are reporting criminal cases and scaring the public.  Hello isn’t that what the media is supposed to do!!!!! And bitch please, most of the stories we hear firsthand from friends la no media also we’d still hear about all this.  And rightfully so, or else how are we going to take steps to be careful or protect ourselves?

Seriously wtf la.  It’s common sense what.  If you don’t see that there’s a problem, how can you ever begin to fix things? Najib/Idris Jala, Y UR MOTHERS NO TEACH U THIS?

Anyway, Mumsy Ooi was so thankful that no harm came to them that she made us all put joss sticks and pray immediately wtf.

We really wanted to find the driver of the white car who saved Ooib and Sherlyn and thanks to the beauty of Facebook, mutual friends and readers found him for us!!!

His exact words taken off FB were:

“Guys, please be safe and don’t walk around the neighborhood at night alone or even if u r not alone, try to avoid walking and be aware of your surroundings especially while driving. I was driving home from work around our school area, and I saw two indian men on

a motorbike went to a couple who were walking together, one of them with a parang, tried to rob them or god know what. It was a split second and coincidentally I was there, so without thinking, I accelerated fast towards them, and pressed the emergency brake just before hitting all of them so that the indian fuckers could back off. One threw a helmet at my car, and another rode away. So I chased the fucker who was on the bike, leaving another fucker with the parang behind. So I chased him and he went into 18/2A, lost his balance, and fell off in front of a house. I didn’t brake in time, so I had to go down further and make a uturn. The fucker left the bike there and ran away. I couldn’t stop them cos they crossed the main road to SS19. I called 50 and they came almost immediately, for once, thanks pdrm. They took the bike away to the station. I hope the couple managed to run away safely, cos I couldn’t find them when I went back to the scene. Please be safe guys.”

Turned out he was a boy from my primary and secondary school!!! If you live around the area, you probably went to my school lol.

Thank goodness he was there and reacted so quickly!  So Hakim Rahman, thank you for being brave and quickwitted and for helping us when we needed it. We suspect you’re secretly Batman.

And so continues my love-hate relationship with my country.

  • I feel you! My phone got nipped twice too, once in a pasar malam, on mother’s day and another time in curve on christmas eve D: The gov is srsly messes up :/ economics, politics, education wise, in addition to what they’re teaching kids nowadays abt LGBT’s and how to identify them. Anyhoos, thank God your brother and Sherlyn are safe and sound! 🙂 the world needs more people like Hakim Rahman! 🙂

  • Hey aud, I hope your bro and his girlf is alright now! Ya I totally disagree with Malaysia being the safest country wtf. First ever ridiculous nonsense I ever heard. Even my dad was Robbed before.

  • I was also almost robbed by a motorbike rider (not knowing race)too. He successfully landed his hand on my bag’s strap and pulled as he goes. Luckily I had my friend beside me for me to pull myself back for balancing. The government has to treat this issue seriously. *ANGRY*
Applause for Hakim Rahman’s and thank god your bro and his gf are safe.

  • Thank goodness they are all right! Hopefully the police can track those man with the bike left behind.

  • The beauty & ugliness of humanity. I’m really glad everyone is okay. Kudos to Hakim Rahman! I hope the would be robbers be caught soon.

  • Me too was almost rob by motorcycliat.. Luck my bag was wit my bf n he is strong enuff to hold it… Another time was stopping @ traffic light.. If ur glass is not tinted there will break it n take ur belongings.. Jus hate all this.. Back then when i was in uk, we can leave our hse door unlock…

  • Hope your brother n his gf are feeling better. When I got attacked, it took months before I could stop palpitating each time I heard footsteps behind me (and that didn’t take place in Malaysia).

Crime exists everywhere but certainly the reaction (government/law enforces/public) differs.

Kudos to Hakim Rahman! Where there is bad, there is good too.

  • Glad your brother and his gf are okay! The person who saved them was a hero. I know it is not safe anywhere in the world and from this incident I will learn to be cautious of my surroundings everywhere I go.

  • OMG go out with a guy also not safe D:

They are really lucky to have that brave and smart guy helping! Even though the robbers were not caught (yet), at least he scared them or punished them a little.

  • I’m not Malaysian, but I get so mad when I read things like this.

Recently we wanted to mass order 马蹄酥 from JB, Teman Sentosa to Singapore. So we contacted one of the lady bosses and she was very happy to received our order. Days later we couldn’t contact her and had a premonition that maybe something had happened to her because her handphone was turned off for a few days. Soon, her cousin called to inform us that she was murdered by foreign workers in her shop. My friend from Malaysia sent me an article that reported the incident. She got murdered because she refused to approved their leave (wt*!). The foreign worker later tried to commit suicide but survived. The saddest part of the story is that the lady was just a young mother and I feel so bad for the family.

My Malaysian friends say these things happen because the government gives Malaysian ICs to ILLEGAL immigrants…which illicits more wt* thoughts.

Anyway, kudos to the hero of the day!

  • Hakim Rahman is really a hero being so brave and fast-reacted!! I bet they not dare to make crime anymore… mmmmm… maybe for half a year or maybe change to snatch thieves.
Thanks to government for not treating this issue properly… or maybe after one of them got robbed, things would change.

anyway, glad that Ooib and his gf are both safe.

  • May I know which housing area is this?

  • sorry bit off the topic. I am sadden to know that ooib broke up with SuetLi after being together for long time. They look perfect match couple. How could Sherlyn interrupt their r/s? I don’t like the newly one.

  • hey aud, so glad your bother and his gf is okay. i was recently robbed about 3 weeks ago while i was walking home and there was a motorbike with 3 indians stopped me halfway pretending to ask for directions. i tried to run but i didn’t managed to and they forced me to give them my bag. I ended up giving away my bag because I was really afraid they were gonna hurt me. One of them had his arm on my neck so there was nothing I can do at that time. I guess my fear has already overlapped my entire body. anyway, i am also glad that i am left unhurt but i am still pretty traumatised about it. well, hope you and your family will stay safe always.

  • thanks for all the nice messages everyone! to those who also got robbed, i’m so sorry 🙁 please be safe!

mel: your comment really pissed me off. are you crazy? barry and suet broke up in freaking 2010, two whole years before he met sherlyn. suet also has dated two other guys after ooib so what the hell are you talking about? is it a coincidence that you’re saying this roughly around the same time that sherlyn is receiving hate messages on her formspring? i cannot believe how evil you are. please stay away, nobody wants someone like you near.

  • mel: and frankly, your opinion has no weightage here.

  • To Mel who totally went off topic of the whole entire blog post, if you have some problem with your eyes for not noticing what this blog is about, I can suggest you a good optician 🙂
And what has it got to do with you about Barry’s relationship? or even Sherlyn’s? And may I ask why you don’t like Barry being together with Sherlyn? Have you have any rights to even say that and honestly, its none of your business… don’t like then don’t go find out.

p/s ; Even if Barry is no longer with Sherlyn (choi wtf) you won’t be on Barry’s next list as well. if he has a next list wtf

  • Glad that Barry and Sherlyn is safe and sound.

Subang is not that safe anymore. My house (ss19/6a) was broken into 3 times within 3 yrs. Luckily all 3 times no one was harmed but traumatised.

My cousin’s house (ss17/5a) also kena. His gf opened the auto gate and parked, those fuckers rode the bike in the house straight and broke the car window to grab the house keys. Lucky enough there were dogs in the house. Those idiots ran off…

  • Sorry to hear about this happening to your family.
It upsets me that all these is happening there. My mom was robbed on the way to the LRT station at knife point on a motorbike too.. It was in the morning during working hours. I’ve been hearing about robberies in Malaysia constantly now. It used to be so safe when I was living there. What happen to our country?? I love being back home but it frightens me to even think about going back home because you have to watch every step and you no longer feel safe anymore! 🙁 do take care

  • I read this on your twitter and I am so relieved that they are safe. There is NOWHERE in the world that is totally safe, and all governments are delusional. In 2010 my dad was at work and didn’t show up at his next work stop, so I reported him missing to the police after we also hadn’t heard from him (he lived in another city). The police began searching for him and 3 months later reported he had been found dead, murdered on the job. And I live in a relatively safe place in Canada. ALWAYS be safe, and make sure you’re never mad at anyone because you might never get the chance to say goodbye.

I’m thankful that guy was there and took that chance to rescue your family and then chase the bad guys, a true hero.

  • Malaysia is no way anywhere near the safest country ranks. My mom was robbed during her morning walk once. I also witness a snatch incident right outside my house last month in broad daylight. So scary!!

  • omg so sweet of the hero who saved your brother! I was tearing up reading the part where you posted from his point of view- “faith in humanity (somewhat) restored!” urgh so pissing off also at the Malaysian system and also how they love to “cover up” the “bad” things. that’s why only here our history textbook facts can change!

  • ZOMG BARRY I HOPE YOU’RE ALRIGHT!!! Please take care future husband wtf

  • Really, I have a love-hate relationship with my country also. I have never involved with cases like that *touchwood, but then I will avoid max to go out at night, avoid max to any petrol station after 8pm, avoid walking in dark street, go to the car park in my condo also i scared ah.. u say la.. sei mou, stay inside the house also need to make sure all the doors are lock, u see la.. sei mou, there is no place safe in Malaysia because of the good gov, janji dicapati. =.=
I need to do everything I can to make sure i am safe *paranoid

  • Aud Aud, since this incident happened in your neighbourhood, the indian robbers might know where you all staying, i read from facebook, if you found any weird symbols nearby your house area, rub it off, because those are the marking from fuckers to target your house! and there is nothing Gov can do to stop them, pls be safe and take care.

  • Whew! glad that your Ooib and his girlfriend is safe. Your situation is same here in our country. The police keeps on saying that the crime rate has gone down but then, robbery and murder suddenly appears in the news. Who is the one lying here?

And maybe, you should start bringing with you pepper spray or a taser (if it’s legal). I think even a perfume will do if someone attacks you. Just spray it in their eyes to have your chance to escape.

    Take care always.

  • By the way u described it, it sounds like sherlyn was protecting ur bro than him protecting her lol.
Sounds useless.. He was quiet? Didn’t console her? Plus ur mum thanks God ur bro was alright wat abt sherlyn?
    Sounds…. Weird.
Just saying based on what you wrote,
If I’m wrong Its my fault

  • courtney: i’m so sorry to hear about this!!!! my thoughts to you and your family 🙁

rox: i said he was quiet and you jump to the conclusion that he wasn’t consoling her? of course he was hugging her the entire time. need to be noisy to console, is it? and obviously my mom was thankful they were both safe la. her exact words were ‘thank god you’re both ok’. i had been writing ‘ooib & sherlyn’ the whole post and was a bit lazy to write it again but i assumed (wrongly) that readers would get that ‘ooib’ referred to the both of them. after such a traumatic event, these are the only inferences you make from my blog post? sigh. thanks for being so encouraging and non-judgmental.

  • Omg so scary!!! I hope ooib n sherlyn r feeling much better now.

  • Hey Aud, I hope your brother feels better now. It’s very dangerous out there I think the people who commits crime are fearless of our police now. Obviously we cannot depend on our public authorities anymore. Hopefully it gets better after election. You should be careful too, bring pepper spray or personal alarm as defence. Take care!

  • This is nonsense. Malaysia does not top the #1 safest and peaceful country in SEA. Hands down, I would say Brunei is the safest. Everytime I visit Malaysia, everyone around me would tell me to be careful of these kind of incidents. God bless Malaysia

  • I never ever think what you think it is. I’m suetLi’s favourite reader. I enjoy seeing how happy they were together and always want to see them get marry in the end because they look awesome couple. I really feel very sad they broke off. Why can’t they stay on and on to lifetime.

  • ayu: they are, thanks!

celine: thank you. same to you!

mel: if you say you’re not, why did you leave such terrible hurtful comments? you think people’s lives and feelings are there for you to try to mess with? and what you said – sherlyn being a 3rd party – is not even true. suet herself said she ended it. if you were suet, how would you feel if e.g. your acquaintance keeps msging you on fb and sighing about why you broke up with your ex? and you call yourself her number 1 reader? you’re just making things up to justify yourself! if you’re sad, fine. you don’t have to go to all our blogs and leave messages about how sad you are. what do you want to achieve? to hurt sherlyn? to anger me, barry, and suet? think properly what you’re doing.

  • When traveling, I always feel safer in other countries than my own country, Malaysia. Really.

  • I was robbed while on motorbike with my bf near the Mont Kiara Golf Club! The guy tried to grab my laptop on my back and we fell and rolled 6 times on the road filled with cars. My knees need stitches and I had deep grazes everywhere. Thank god we’re still alive and thanks to those who helped us.

  • You are right it don’t benefit me anything nor do I get gain from it. I apologies for terrible comments. I didn’t know the real reason till you explain things to me. I know I must not get too personal when couple broke up. Audrey, my apology. Thank you for replies.

  • Bravooo stranger!

  • kenot read comments anymore?? :(nnanyway! more importantly! ya i was also damn T_T D: when i found out about the incident! really thankfully got hakim rahman!

  • wah some of these deluded people follow people’s lives until like following drama like that wtf. can get angry when people break up for their own personal reasons and make assumptions.

damn stupid, go and read a book or something wtf.

  • Can ah! Old comments should be integrated in the new system in time!

  • Thank goodness they are safe 🙁

  • I would have run the motorcyclists over. My sister almost got dragged from a motorcyclist thief once. For him, I’d hit reverse.

  • My home got robbed twice before and my mum was hurt by one of the fuckers cos the cunts sneaked in late at night.. so angry! that’s why i have grown to hate the country even more.. but anyway, glad that ooib and sherlyn are safe ^^ next time don’t walk around late at night unless there are many ppl 🙂

  • Omg! Glad to hear that both of them are safe! My house too just broken into by a minimum of 3 non-Malaysians at around 4am one day and my mum nearly got attacked. Thankfully, she reacted as soon as she sensed something amiss. They tried to break her door until dad went to shout through the windows for help that they finally ran away. Police came and did basically nothing. They didn’t even dare to enter my house wtf! Malaysia boleh. Zzz.

  • came across ur blog by chance coz my school fren, lay see and pierre pang were tagged in your wedding pix and i recognized u from the you tube video of your wedding proposal. seriously! ur like the super funniest + cutest person on the planet. u shd consider turning bits and pieces of ur blog into a book!!! i would buy and read it!!! xx happy married life to you!!
