Kempen Sopan Santun

(in English, Courtesy Campaign)

This is my New Year’s resolution for 2013.

I don’t know if it’s just me or what but I think Malaysians are getting ruder and ruder!  The Malaysians I’ve had the misfortune of encountering anyway.

Or maybe the older I get, the more intolerant I become of rudeness.

When we were in the US for Fatty’s work we got used to the politeness exhibited by the Americans whether they were just passersby or shop staff.  Some nitpicks say that their greetings “Hi how are you” and please-s and thank yous are uttered automatically without meaning but whatever la I’d rather take fake compulsory courtesy than blatant rudeness.  I don’t get the logic behind that.

Then when we touched down in KL, we naturally went to passport control and immigration.  It was in the middle of the night.  I went up to the immigration officer with my passport and said “Hello!”

Silence wtf.

After she was done stamping my passport, she handed it back to me again in silence wtf.

I said, “thank you.”

Stony-faced glare.

ಠ_ಠ

Unless you’re mute there is no excuse for this.  Even if you’re mute the least you can do is smile acknowledgment la very hard meh? It’s early in the morning but if I can remember my manners, why can’t you?

I really don’t remember Malaysians being this rude!  I was overseas for four years but every time I came back, while Malaysians were probably not unfailingly polite, at least we were still friendly-ish!  At least we responded when spoken to wtf.

A couple of days after that, Fatty and I were in Publika buying magazines.  I think it was the Tatler that featured our wedding haha and the ViVi issue I was in.

Fatty handed over money to the guy and said, “thank you.”

Silence again.

The third incident in recent memory was when I was in Isetan one day.  I got into the elevator, and there were other people coming in after me so I held the door open for them.

As luck would have it, the elevator was broken wtf.  The doors closed and opened repeatedly so we couldn’t move.  So I held the door open again while the people all filed out.

I got out after them and saw they were already going in to the next elevator.  I rushed after them and shouted “WAIT WAIT” but nobody moved and the door closed on me WTF.

OH MY BLOOD BOILS JUST THINKING ABOUT IT.  I KINDLY HELD THE DOOR FOR YOU WHILE YOU ENTER AND EXIT AND YOU CAN’T EVEN WAIT FOR ME TO GET INTO THE NEW ELEVATOR WITH YOU?

This happened a couple months ago but thinking about it again makes me want to break something! Preferably the elevator they were in.

I really don’t get it!  At which point in recent years did we get so rude and disregarding of other people!

What’s wrong with taking one nanosecond out of your day to wish someone well or even just reply a polite inquiry!!!!!!!!

That’s not all.

Dunno if I’m just unlucky but I’m swarmed by thick skinned who don’t understand the concepts of queues.  They think a line is actually a circle and, like a herd of cattle, will cluster around with no regard of the people who are actually civic-minded enough to line up.

Then when I tell them off, they will just look around all unabashed like they just realized there was a line and saunter casually to the back to line up.  Like a proper human being.

And I cannot count the number of times driving, some idiot has edged into my lane with no hint of a signal light at all.

And they’re all either freaking taxis or big ass luxurious cars.  Got money buy yourself some manners la!

I get so mad everyday dealing with all these buffoons!  So bad for my blood pressure.

Fatty thinks all this rudeness and lack of civic consciousness does not occur in other countries because if someone does something like that, the people around will tell them off and the wrongdoer will be shamed.

So that’s my 2013 resolution – to tell off whoever is rude wtf.  And to do it very loudly so everyone else can hear it.

I told Fatty and he’s convinced I’ll get myself beaten up someday wtf.  But that’s what I have a Fatty for isn’t it?

And that’s what I’ve been doing!

Although the other day I did go a bit overboard.  In my defense, I was already grumpy about something wtf.  I was trying to get on to the escalator but there was a bunch of teenage boys standing in front of it blocking my way.

I shouted, “OY!” and they hurriedly scampered away wtf.

Thinking about it I feel a bit bad la.  Luckily nobody else on a kempen sopan santun was nearby cos they’d be entirely in their right to tell me off too hahahahaha.

And today, when I clicked on my signal to move lanes, the car behind sped up on purpose so I couldn’t change lanes in front of him (even though before that he was like three car lengths away) -_____-  I honked him wtf.  I don’t know if that gets my message across but whatever la I’m tired of bottling up my emotions wtf.

The other day we were coming back from Bangkok so we went through immigration again.

I said “hello!” to the inspector.

Silence.

Undeterred, I looked over at Fatty who had passed the checkpoint and was waiting for me on the other side.  “Another rude Malaysian!  I said hello he didn’t say anything back.”

When the inspector handed me my passport, he said, “thank you.”

SUCCESS!

So who’s with me on this kempen sopan santun?

  • I love ur post!! Well said! Even when sg start courtesy campaign, I didn’t c any diff. I know how u feel. My blood boils every time when I’m on my way to work. I dunno if it’s the asian ‘culture’ or wat. I think this shld b make known to everyone in the world.

  • This is sooo much better than those kempen budi bahasa and whatever sopan-santun kempen!

  • Same here! After living in Aus for so long please, thankyou, hello, etc is just like a reflex for me. I do mean it though..maybe like 50% xD? Going back to Msia is like a total WTF for me. I have to actually be rude on purpose..its like my way of getting back at them for being rude..kind of. Once this lady was in this half full elevator and screamed in my face SORRY FULL and shut the doors in my face.. made my blood boil. I should’ve said something back but was too much in shock =/ regrets..

  • Having worked in the customer service industry, I have experience the rudest of Malaysians who expect people to serve them like Gods while treating us like dirt. Just try answering calls for a while and you’d be surprised at how these people act when they are hiding behind their voices, 8 out of 10 would be complaining before we can even assist them

  • 100% support! its time for Malaysians to learn their lessons!

  • i know! i’ve actually worked in customer service before and yes it was terrible. but i give them benefit of the doubt that they’re just angry and normally wouldn’t be rude

  • WAH I totally agree with u about cars entering my lanes without signaling first!!! Pisses me off so badly ALL THE TIME! I always think, if I can signal before entering ppl’s lane as a notice, that person sure can do the same -__- Malaysian drivers are the worst!! nnAnd I’m with u for this campaign!! Although I may not be that polite as sometimes when I take ticket from the toll, I feel so bad that I don’t say hi.. But it can be awkward! So I just smile haha but surprisingly all very friendly now

  • good!

  • WTF i hope that lady got stuck in the lift!!

  • hahahaha isn’t it the same thing!?

  • have you seen kids be rude? D:

  • yea campaigns by the govt… i don’t see how they would work lol. it needs grassroot action!

  • ya! i signal also so that motorcyclists can see and stay safe out of my way. don’t understand fuckers who have so little regard for safety, much less manners -_-

  • how to make it viral? you all go tweet or FB it please! and let’s all tell people off lolol if enough people get behind it, it might actually work

  • hahaha ambassador your head

  • sorry to hear about your experience 🙁 but i guess sales staff saying hello or welcome is better than not doing anything at all?

  • yea no apologies! -_-

  • YES it’s always the customer when we’re the ones keeping them in business and giving them jobs. nngood for you on still staying polite regardless!

  • i hope so too!

  • hahaha well did they smile?

  • ok la crime is a separate issue -_- are you from singapore?

  • HI AUDREY! Hahaha very happy that you often reply comments!!! nnYa ya motorcyclists always think they boss!!! But they somehow will just come out from nowhere!! And then if we bang them, confirm our fault.. Tskkkk.! I can’t stand road bullies too 🙁 cause I’m like still a P driver and driving a small car.. Tough life hahaha

  • yea i hate that too. esp if she’s working at the airport, isn’t she supposed to be able to speak english? how does she deal with foreign tourists?

  • the tak apa attitude lets others get away with a lot of things lo. 🙁

  • i don’t know if it’s an asian culture because it definitely does not happen in japan or thailand or even indonesia.

  • you’re right. it’s not just school, the parents are usually the rude ones, and the kids just learn by example

  • could be true! i’ve heard that east malaysians are really friendly. could be a KL thing. which makes it easier to fix!!!

  • yay! i actually want to read about incidents where you’ve corrected people on their manners. everyone who has done it should tweet or tag me or something!

  • do it!!!

  • join the campaign!

  • yes sometimes i get that too hahahaha

  • yea!

  • DO AH!

  • yay!

  • if they ignore you just continue talking louder and louder hahahaha. and talk to others around you and point out their behavior HAHAHA

  • at least the manager knows to apologize!

  • oh yea but i don’t really get that very often! that’s more inconsiderate than rude i think

  • 2nd sabahan i’ve seen here! people in sabah or east malaysia are probably a lot better than west malaysians 🙁

  • thank you… you do it too la!

  • yea that’s why! maybe we can start off by focusing on immigration officers wtf

  • wah good for your boyfriend!

  • YAA already in the wrong but still so thick skinned

  • I seriously agree with u audrey. Some ppl in the service industry just dont bother to say Thank U, u r welcome or even smile. Like hello they are in a service industry how can they do so! Piff. I really hope malaysians can be more polite n friendly! It wouldnt b good if this kind of situation happens on tourist! They will hv bad impression n think that the malaysians hv no manners. Sigh.

  • Lol i think the immigration officers, they got bored of their job d.. Meet so many people in just one day.. xDnBtw.. I agree with you.. Malaysian people nowadays ah got so many invisible man.. Even I point it out, out loud these people just ignore.. >_> They just have problem with queuing, saying sorry and thank you.. Malays ke chinese ke indian, all the same.. Especially youngsters, if they bumped on you, not even a sorry.. Sometimes it not my fault, but I’m the one who said sorry..? -____-

  • im in for this campaign! sooo agree wit u tat ppl owes trying to speed up whenever i try to overtake to the other lane. services at restaurants here are vy bad too! it’s ok if they don smile, but giving u black face summore! im really reluctant to pay for the service charge sometimes, can i don pay??

  • I totally agree about the rudeness… Talking to immigration ppl is like talking to the wall!!! In perth usually when we go through a door we hold it for the person behind if they are near.. So when I went back to Malaysia for holidays on my sem break I expect the same thing too… Instead the man just let the door close right in my face, seriously WTF and it hit my nose!!! Expectation too high

  • I’m with you! nI keep thinking about saying it out loud to shame them or something but I never do. You have motivated me to just speak up.

  • Hi Aud,nI totally agree with you about rude Malaysians, I’ve a cultural shock when people slammed the door in front of me as I was just walking probably half a meter behind the person. I was so used to holding on to doors for the next person in the UK and that it’s very strange to have people slamming door on you.nOn the other note, one day when I was holding the door for some other people, they were so grateful about it that they kept saying thank you to me like I was an angel from heaven. wtf.

  • This is a story that happened to me last night. I went for a late night movie at 1U. You know how when you exit the cinema, they lead you out directly to the carpark through the fire(?) exit? So, as I exited the door (double swing door with left side opened, right side closed) I turned right, but was stopped short when I felt pain on my head, and somehow my leg was stuck. Turns out some idiot pushed open the right door (which was fine, coz we get that people want to leave faster). (1/3)

  • The thing that irked me the most was, when we were momentarily stunned there for a few seconds, he said nothing and went walked off! @$#$%$#% So I stopped him and told him that he ter-banged my head with the door. And the nerve he had to reply, “I don’t understand why y’all don’t want to open the other door.” And I had to demand for an apology. WTF. I was like, err what happened to your manners? So I asked him, “Did you go to school?” (2/3)
